Yet another story of incompetence and bad business.
The latest happened last week when my aging truck started to make a weird “lawn mower” sound coming from the engine fan. I went to the shop I trust the most for an express assessment. My suspicions were correct: the fan hub bearings are starting to go. The service manager comes back with an estimate of $871 for a “super kit” to rebuild the defective unit + 4 hours labor. Then comes the long winded excuses that the parts are rare for this engine, yada-yada, and that it must be special ordered from Memphis TN. They did not recommend me using the truck further for fear of the bearings breaking off and sending the fan through the radiator. This basically busted the rest of my work week so I had to cancel on my customer. The headaches begin.
The kit was supposed to come in on Friday at worst. Lies. Monday, nope, still not here. Then it hit me: Why the hell does my fan hub unit truly needs rebuilding? Surely, there must be a rebuilt or new unit available for a straight swap? I investigate at my local shop (I don’t go there for service because of the poor training of their techs) for parts availability and price. Believe it or not, they quote me $968 for a brand new unit that’s already assembled and ready to be swapped in 2 hours labor instead of 4. WTF? Those assholes at my “trusted” shop took the path that was advantageous for them since having to rebuild my unit on-site would wield them twice the labor charges. I give them a call and they quote me for $1,278 for the very same part. I confront them with the other quote and after some deliberation, they agree of selling it to me at the lower quote if I come back for the install. What’s the worst thing in all this? They have it in stock… they always did.
In short, I lost 1 week of work to wait on a fucking rebuild kit that’s almost as expensive as a brand new assembled unit. I will be saving money overall because it’s 2 hours less labor ($130/hour accumulates fast). Why didn’t they offer me this better alternative in the first place? I was also told by the other shop that an on-site rebuild is a bad idea and only specialized shops should do that kind of work. I cannot comprehend the incompetence and the bad business practice. If I didn’t “realize” things, they would have ripped me off badly. I’m supposed to be a “valued customer” even! Proof that confidence should never be given away blindly and that some people will take advantage of the trust you give them. Good nature should not be abused. This is not how business is done. I will be asking a lot of questions when I go tomorrow for the fix. I will also be demanding excuses. I will be strongly re-evaluating my relationship with them.
If only special tools wouldn’t be needed for this… damn you Detroit, damn you Freightliner!
When will this shit stop? It’s more of the same, ‘huh? Things never change…
